5 Questions to Ask Before You Buy an “AI-Powered” SaaS Tool
Half the SaaS tools launching this year have slapped “AI-powered” on their landing page, and a good chunk of that is a single API call wrapped in a nicer UI. Before you sign a contract, these five questions cut through the marketing.
What model is actually running, and where does your data go?
Ask whether it’s a thin wrapper around a third-party API or something purpose-built, whether your data is used to train their model, and what the retention and deletion policy actually says.
What happens when the model is wrong?
Every AI feature has an error rate. Ask what the fallback behavior looks like, whether a human reviews high-stakes outputs, and who’s liable when the tool gets something expensive wrong.
Is the AI doing the core job, or bolted onto one?
Sometimes the AI feature is a genuine improvement; sometimes it’s a marketing layer on a workflow that worked fine without it, priced at a premium for the label.
What’s the real cost as usage grows?
Token-based pricing can scale in ways a flat SaaS subscription never did. Ask for a cost projection at 10x your current usage before you commit, not after the first surprising invoice.
Can you get your data out if you leave?
Check export formats and lock-in risk now, while it’s a hypothetical question instead of an urgent one.
