AI Agents for Internal IT Helpdesks: What’s Actually Worth Automating
Every company’s IT helpdesk drowns in the same handful of requests: password resets, access grants, software installs. An AI agent can take a real bite out of that queue, but only if you’re honest about which tickets actually need a human.
The Easy Wins: Repetitive, Low-Risk Requests
Password resets, VPN access renewals, standard software provisioning, and “how do I connect to the printer” questions are ideal automation targets. They’re well-documented, low-risk if handled wrong, and make up a large share of ticket volume at most companies. An agent that can verify identity, check policy, and execute the request directly, not just point to a KB article, removes real workload without adding risk.
Where Access and Permissions Need a Human Check
Anything touching sensitive systems, elevated permissions, or off-boarding a departing employee should keep a human in the loop, even if the agent drafts the request. The cost of a wrongly-granted admin credential is much higher than the time saved automating it, so this is exactly the kind of action worth a human-in-the-loop approval step rather than full autonomy.
Diagnosing Hardware and Software Issues
An agent can triage first: gather error messages, check known-issue databases, and walk a user through common fixes before escalating. This cuts the “did you restart it” back-and-forth out of a human tech’s day, even when the agent can’t resolve the ticket itself. Full resolution of novel hardware failures still needs a person.
What to Measure Before You Expand Scope
Track ticket deflection rate and reopened-ticket rate separately: a high deflection rate with a high reopen rate means the agent is closing tickets it shouldn’t. Start with the highest-volume, lowest-risk category, prove it out, then expand category by category instead of automating the whole helpdesk at once.
