The basic idea

Instead of your app repeatedly asking another system “did anything change yet,” a webhook lets that system notify you the instant something happens.

Where webhooks show up

Payment providers notifying you when a charge succeeds, a CRM alerting your app when a lead is created, or a chat platform pushing a new message to your bot in real time.

What you actually need to handle one

An endpoint that verifies the request is genuinely from the expected sender, and processes it quickly, since most providers expect a fast response and will retry otherwise.

The reliability gap to plan for

Webhooks can arrive out of order, arrive twice, or occasionally not arrive at all. A solid integration handles duplicate events safely.
