What Is a dApp, Really? A Plain-English Explanation

“dApp” gets thrown around as if everyone already knows what it means, but the concept is simpler than the jargon suggests. Here’s a plain-English breakdown of what actually makes an app decentralized, and why that distinction matters.

The Core Logic Lives On-Chain

A dApp’s key rules, like who owns what, how a trade executes, how votes are counted, run as code on a blockchain instead of a company’s private server. That code is public, and once deployed it typically can’t be quietly changed by the team that built it.

Your Wallet Replaces Your Login

Instead of an email and password, you connect a crypto wallet to prove who you are and approve actions. There’s no “forgot password” flow and no central database of user accounts for a hacker to breach — the trade-off is that losing your wallet’s private key means losing access entirely.

Every Action Costs Gas

Because the blockchain’s network of computers has to process and store every transaction, most meaningful actions in a dApp cost a small fee, paid in the network’s native token. This is unlike a normal app, where clicking a button is free to the user.

Transparency Is the Trade-Off

Anyone can inspect a dApp’s code and verify its logic actually does what it claims, and every transaction is publicly viewable on-chain. That openness builds trust without a central authority, but it also means there’s no customer support line to reverse a mistake.
