What Is Agentic Commerce, and Should Your Business Care?
A new phrase is showing up in product roadmaps: agentic commerce, AI agents that browse, compare, and purchase on a person’s behalf. It’s not just chatbot hype — real infrastructure is being built for it, and it will change how some businesses sell online.
What It Actually Means
Agentic commerce is an AI agent acting as a shopper: given a budget and a goal, it searches, compares options across sites, and completes the purchase using stored payment credentials, with a person approving the final step. It’s different from a recommendation engine because it takes the action, not just the suggestion.
What’s Real Today
A handful of platforms now support agent-initiated checkout, and major AI assistants can already browse and fill out forms on a user’s behalf. Full autonomous purchasing without human approval is still rare and mostly experimental — most current agentic commerce still has a person confirming the final transaction.
What It Means for Sellers
If agents are going to shop on your site, your product data, pricing, and checkout flow need to be readable by a machine, not just attractive to a human eye: clean structured data, accurate stock info, and a checkout that doesn’t require solving a CAPTCHA. Sellers who ignore this risk becoming invisible to a growing category of buyer.
Hype vs Reality
Most businesses don’t need to rebuild their storefront for agentic commerce this year, but ignoring it entirely is a mistake for anyone selling online. The sensible move is watching the space, cleaning up product data now, and treating full agent-native checkout as a 12-24 month horizon rather than an emergency.
